Player Analysis: No. 3 Alexander 75, South Paulding 65

2022 6-3 G Zion Fruster – Alexander
There’s a lot to like about Zion Fruster’s game, a wiry guard with size that has started picking up serious interest, logging an offer from D-II UVA Wise just last week. Fruster is a consistent scorer on the perimeter. He gets great lift on his jumper, able to pull-up and elevate over defenders. He has an easy release and is good both off the catch and off the dribble. In the fourth quarter, he found his points at the rim, finishing in transition and through traffic. Fruster finished with 23 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist. He’s one of the better stock risers in Georgia, as a versatile guard that can play either the 1 or 2.

2022 6-6 W Jah’Kim Payne – Alexander
Jah’Kim Payne is a smooth multidimensional player that can play 1-5 at the high school level. Payne is a Swiss Army Knife. He can initiate the offense with his ball handling and court vision, serve as a slasher on the wing or anchor himself in the high post and decide whether to attack or distribute. Payne glides to the rim, scoring on finger rolls as he slices through the defense with his long strides. He came up big in the fourth quarter with eight points, six via drives while also making plays on defense. His length and mobility help him defend all positions, giving him great switchability whenever screens come into play. Jah’Kim finished with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. His combination of length, size, versatility and skill should put him squarely on college radars, especially D-II programs.

2023 6-5 W Marvin McGhee – Alexander
McGhee provided some timely buckets when South Paulding was threatening. He helped keep the Spartans at bay with a pair of threes and a drive. McGhee isn’t as long or athletic as Payne, but he’s a serviceable combo-forward that can spend time playing inside or out. He was effective on the glass and made a huge block in the fourth quarter in transition that led to a four-point swing, making the game 61-54 instead of 59-56. Marvin tallied 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block.

2024 6-2 SG Andrew LaVigne – South Paulding
The growth and confidence of Andrew LaVigne is shining through more and more often. The sturdy shooter caught fire in the third quarter to bring the Spartans to within one after trailing by as many as 12 points. LaVigne poured in three threes in the frame and hit five for the game. Andrew plays with good balance and gets his feet set and shoulders squared quickly when locating the rim. He has a pretty shot and moved well without the ball on cuts to the basket. LaVigne netted a team-high 22 points. If he is able to maintain his consistency and continue to improve, he could be South Paulding’s most dangerous scorer next season, part of what will be a veteran backcourt with major experience.

2023 6-2 SG Randy Harris – South Paulding
Randy Harris opened the game passing the ball exceptionally well, hitting cutters with sharp bounce passes as the on-ball pressure of Alexander forced the Spartans to initiate their offense far from the basket. Harris was able to calmly survey the floor and fit the ball to teammates when they had a window to score. After a scoreless first half, Harris started to hunt his offense as the game wore on, getting downhill using his leaping ability to score at the rim. Harris scored 13 points, 10 in the fourth quarter as he implemented floaters and scored in transition. South Paulding needs Harris to stay aggressive. Sometimes he can fade into the flow of the game without being a factor, but when he’s looking to attack, the Spartans are at their best. Harris’ energy led to 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal and 1 block.

2023 6-2 CG Jeremiah Taylor – South Paulding
Coming off the bench as he recovers from an injury, Taylor provided a nice spark with 11 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Typically South Paulding’s leading scorer and best player when healthy, Jeremiah was able to bring a change of pace as a sub. Going up against the length of Alexander was a tough task as Taylor’s offense primarily comes at the rim. He was able score all five of his field goals in the paint, but had to work extra hard to do so. Even while it wasn’t his best offensive production, Taylor was able to make positive contributions elsewhere, especially with his passing. Unlocking a consistent three-point shot is still the deciding factor as to how special Taylor can be.

The final week of the regular season is upon us. Some regions have already wrapped up their schedule while the majority finish up over the next few days. With that being said, please send region tournament brackets along with All-Region Teams to [email protected] in order to be added to the Master Schedule which will be updated in real-time with final scores throughout the postseason.

For the first time since Week 7, there is no change to the Class 7A rankings. No. 1 Pebblebrook rallied to beat No. 6 McEachern 76-75, Jaiun Simon sinking a late free throw to complete the come back from down nearly 20 points in the third quarter. Rider-signee Kami Young scored 22 points followed by Jordan Brown’s 18 and Troy-signee Andre Young’s 14. McEachern got 17 apiece from Jalen Hilliard and Braden Sparks. No. 2 Newton held off No. 7 Grayson 70-68 withstanding 19 points from Clemson-signee Chauncey Wiggins. No. 5 North Gwinnett beat last week’s Class 6A No. 2 Shiloh 59-52 on the road, Clemson-signee RJ Godfrey collecting 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

There were some major results in Class 6A, headlined by No. 1 Wheeler surviving No. 7 Osborne in overtime 69-67, Appalachian State-signee Zocko Littleton’s last second three coming a fraction after the buzzer. Radford-signee Kyle Burns scored 20 points to pace the Wildcats. Osborne is down two more spots and has been a mirror image of No. 4 Shiloh, the last two teams to lose in the classification. Both are now riding three-game losing streaks as Osborne also fell 49-48 to Allatoona while Shiloh’s perfect season was shattered with an 0-3 week losing 59-44 at Habersham Central, 46-42 at Lanier and 59-52 to Class 7A No. 5 North Gwinnett, dropping the Generals two spots and now likely needing to beat No. 5 Buford to have a chance at the one-seed heading into the region tournament. No. 3 Alexander is red-hot, winning nine in a row with their latest a 66-59 victory over Cumberland Christian, Zion Fruster tallying 18 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals.

No. 1 Eagle’s Landing has been the most consistent team in Class 5A, recording a 71-52 win over Stockbridge to stay ahead of the pack. No. 2 St. Pius X slept walked through the first half against Northview down 28-15 at the break, but woke up for a 73-58 win behind Grant Rowe’s 20 points, 16 coming in the second half. No. 5 Jonesboro slips two places with a 70-64 loss to Creekside. Coach Omari Forts won his 300th game after No. 3 Tri-Cities beat Drew (70-27) and Banneker (75-51).

No. 2 Monroe finished a perfect regular season in Region 1-4A, going 10-0 with wins over No. 3 Westover (60-59) and Dougherty (70-49). JT Fulkrod scored 12 points in No. 5 Jefferson’s 60-49 win over East Hall while Keshawn Evans pulled down 18 points and 21 rebounds in No. 7 Druid Hills’ 50-42 win against Stephenson. No. 9 North Oconee defeated East Hall 43-25 behind Jake Chandler’s 11 points. Bainbridge (17-7) departs from the poll with losses at Dougherty (58-42) and at Cairo (51-45). No. 10 Marist climbs back into the Top 10 after beating Mays 45-44 and edging Arabia Mountain 36-32.

In Class 3A, No. 2 Windsor Forest won at Groves 55-46. No. 5 Cross Creek got revenge with a 76-69 win at No. 6 Thomson as Jayden Pack scored 24 points.

No. 2 Pace Academy netted a 55-46 road win at Lovett in Region 6-2A, Cincinnati-signee Josh Reed posting 19 points and 13 rebounds to overcome Michigan-commit Christian Anderson’s 21 points. No. 9 Putnam County shocked No. 5 Westside-Augusta 64-63 after trailing 53-41 heading into the fourth. No. 7 Washington County outlasted Laney 80-74 in overtime thanks to Tra’Vonte Byrd’s 19 points and Quinton Knight’s 17. Chattooga (16-6) fell in overtime 60-52 at Model, dropping out of the Top 10. No. 10 Northeast-Macon resurfaces after a pair of wins over Bleckley County (64-56) and Lamar County (70-60). Mercer football-signee Travion Solomon is averaging 17 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.3 steals to lead the Raiders.

Another week, another slew of changes in Class A-Private due to the formidable Region 7. No. 4 Christian Heritage holds onto their spot, but did lose 71-65 in overtime at No. 6 Walker who jumps four places. No. 5 Darlington yo-yos back up three spots after splitting their season series with No. 7 North Cobb Christian with a resounding 81-56 win, Patrick Shelley hanging 23 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists while Braden Bell scored 17 to drop the Eagles four spots. Outside of the Region 7 vortex, No. 2 Galloway defeated No. 9 Providence Christian 59-54 behind Anthony Arrington’s 26 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals. There is good news for the Storm however as VMI-signee Chance Thacker has returned to action. He scored a team-high 9 points in a low scoring 55-47 win against Holy Innocents’ earlier in the week. No. 3 King’s Ridge bounces up three spots after three teams ahead of them lose. The Tigers beat St. Francis 75-55. No. 8 Mt. Pisgah is down three spaces following an upset loss at Lakeview Academy 71-62. No. 10 First Presbyterian Day squeaked by Tattnall Square Academy 56-55 as Jay King finished with 23 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. King followed up his performance with 42 points in a blowout of Mt. de Sales 92-40.

The top seven in Class A-Public remains unchanged. Portal (13-7) and Mitchell County (17-6) fall out of the poll. The Panthers lost 73-70 to Bryan County then saw a lead slip away against Effingham County 50-48. Mitchell County had close wins at Terrell County (69-66) and at Randolph-Clay (44-39) before getting trounced by undefeated No. 4 Calhoun County 96-64. No. 9 Towns County is back in the rankings led by Collin Crowder, the multi-sport standout pouring in 25.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. No. 10 Chattahoochee County returns after a 1-1 week saw the Panthers lose for the second time to Macon County 52-37 but rebound with a 66-24 win at Marion County.
