The 2024-25 GHSA Boys Basketball season is upon us. With the crunch of seven classifications into six, expect winning a state title to become even harder, unless you are a smaller public school. With private schools from Class 3A to 1A all vying for just one championship, tiny county schools have an opportunity to make history. Tracking the power ratings system will be interesting in Year 1 of implementation as gamesmanship as far as scheduling goes will come back into play for the smaller classifications over the next few years. The end of the seven-classification era is nearly upon us, which means it will be even harder to win a state title next year but in the present day, there are still banners to be hung. Enjoy it while you still can. The GHSA basketball season is finally upon us, but this may be the last time recognizing the high school landscape as sweeping changes are forthcoming for next season. NIL deals are already here but more tangibly next year Class 7A will be no more, crunching the state back into six classifications with specifics on power ratings and public/private championships still to be ironed out. The 2022-23 season is officially upon us. The shakeup of reclassification has strengthened some classes while watering down others. For the first time since 2012 public schools and private schools are mixed together in the 1A classifications. It will be interesting to see how public schools fare this time around as from 2001-2012, the two split winning six titles apiece. Also new in 2022 is the long-awaited completed integration of the 35-second shot clock. Will it make a drastic difference? Will there be growing pains? We will find out soon enough. And lastly, don’t let anyone tell you there is a recession. With 175 reported transfers and more movement surely to take place even after the season starts, there must be plenty of affordable housing and a robust job market available in certain parts of the state.
