A handful of showcase events tipped off the 2022-23 GHSA season. Only two classifications see any movement in their respective polls which means this week’s breakdown will be brief.Class 7A was relatively quiet with no changes in the poll. No. 1 Brookwood crushed East Jackson 63-28 behind Danielle Osho’s 26 points and 12 rebounds. No. 3 Norcross received 13 points from Jania Akins and 12 apiece from Markiesa Lancaster and Kayla Lindsey to knock off Class A D-I No. 2 St. Francis 56-55. No. 9 Hillgrove scored a pair of wins, beating Westlake 66-44 and Tift County 61-42.
All four teams that played in Class 6A won, leading to a stalemate in the rankings. No. 2 Lovejoy held off Campbell 61-57 behind Bryanna Preston’s 26 points. No. 3 Rockdale County rocked Heritage-Conyers 89-34. No. 8 Woodward Academy outlasted Class 5A No. 7 Union Grove 67-58, surviving 31 turnovers. George Washington-signee Sara Lewis posted 19 points and 11 rebounds. Facing multiple suspensions, No. 10 Woodstock defeated East Paulding 54-41.
There is movement in Class 5A after Greenbrier (0-1) was upset at No. 6 Jones County 56-48, dropping the Preseason No. 4 Wolfpack out of the Top 10 to make way for the Greyhounds. Kimmya Epps exploded for 27 points in the win. No. 1 Kell handled Westlake 65-31 while No. 7 Union Grove dropped 67-58 to Class 6A No. 8 Woodward Academy.
Everything remains the same in Class 4A. No. 3 Griffin got 22 points from Aaliyah Duranham in their 75-25 rout of Upson-Lee. No. 5 Stockbridge toppled Class 3A Preseason No. 6 Cross Creek 61-43. No. 7 East Forsyth beat Lanier 65-41.
In Class 3A, No. 5 Carver-Columbus sinks two spots following a 65-56 loss to Pebblebrook. No. 1 Hebron Christian used a big second quarter to put away No. 8 White County 56-35. No. 6 Pickens blasted Cherokee Bluff 71-25 while No. 7 Cross Creek lost 61-43 to Class 4A No. 5 Stockbridge and No. 9 Monroe was upended 45-34 by Westover.
Class 2A saw three teams win and two teams lose, but the poll will stay put for at least another week. No. 1 Mt. Paran won at Tallulah Falls 63-39 while No. 2 Landmark Christian fell 51-43 at McEachern. No. 5 Josey beat Grovetown 64-42 behind Arieonna Booker’s 16 points and 9 rebounds. No. 6 Laney lost 72-57 to Veterans. No. 8 Banks County placed four players in double digits led by Addison Hoard’s 15 points as the Leopards won at East Hall 51-39 without the services of Emmanuel-signee Kamryn Grier.
Three out of the Top Four were in action in Class A D-I. No. 1 Galloway blew out Dutchtown 61-24 as Tianna Thompson recorded 19 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. No. 2 St. Francis lost to Class 7A No. 3 Norcross 56-55, but holds tight to their spot. No. 4 Woodville-Tompkins overpowered Midtown behind Janiyah Heyward’s 19 points and Brianna Pelote’s double-double.
Only No. 1 Lake Oconee Academy played in Class A D-II this week. The Titans scored a pair of easy wins, blasting Bulloch Academy (61-40) and Frederica Academy (78-34).
