The third annual Sandy’s Spiel Showcase welcomed 13 different college programs to Grayson High School on Saturday to evaluate seven games including 11 ranked teams that benefited from playing on the big stage. With so many Top 10 matchups, we have some interesting changes in the polls this week.
Class 7A No. 1 Archer blew past Class 4A No. 6 Baldwin at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase 70-54 as Ashanti Bryant caught fire with 22 points while Courtney Nesbitt netted 15 and MeMe Whitehead added 13 points and 9 rebounds. No. 2 Brookwood pounded Class 5A No. 1 Kell 69-52 at the Hawks-Naismith Holiday Classic as Ohio State-signee Diana Collins scored 24 points and Danielle Osho collected 19 points and 15 rebounds. No. 3 Norcross received 18 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists from Jania Akins but lost 64-51 to Class 6A No. 3 Lovejoy at Hawks-Naismith. No. 7 Campbell defeated Hillgrove (8-3) 59-53, knocking the Hawks out of the rankings. No. 8 North Paulding snapped Class A D-II No. 1 Lake Oconee Academy’s 29-game winning streak at the Sandy’ Spiel Showcase 42-32 as Jayda Jackson scored 15 points, Ava Andrews added 14 and Kaden McCorvey picked up 11 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocks. Carrollton (3-2) exits the poll after a 46-39 loss at Class 5A No. 6 Hiram. Resurfacing are No. 9 South Forsyth and No. 10 Lowndes. The War Eagles beat Creekview 51-41 at the Cherokee-Forsyth Challenge and how now won six-straight games. Lowndes won at Bainbridge 65-23.
No. 1 River Ridge dazzled at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase, Class 6A’s finest racing to a 91-62 win at Grayson. Kayla Cleaveland had a monster game finishing with 30 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 4 steals and 1 block, matching Grayson at halftime with 26 points. Sophia Pearl sank five threes en route to 24 points while Penn-signee Mataya Gayle tallied 12 points and 10 assists and Allie Sweet double-doubled with 11 points and 10 rebounds. No. 3 Lovejoy won at No. 7 Woodward Academy 87-78 and at Class 7A No. 3 Norcross 64-51 at Hawks-Naismith, Bryanna Preston recording 26 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals while Austin Peay-signee La’Nya Foster finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 3 assists. No. 5 Langston Hughes climbs three spots after beating No. 6 New Manchester 45-38 to sink the Jaguars two places. The Panthers closed their week with a 54-45 loss to Class A D-I No. 1 Galloway at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase, Kyla Greene with 11 points and 9 rebounds for Langston Hughes. No. 8 North Forsyth slips a spot after winning at Lambert 66-60 but losing to Sequoyah 51-48 at the Cherokee-Forsyth Challenge who had fallen 57-34 to No. 1 River Ridge earlier in the week.
No Jada Peterson hurt Class 5A No. 1 Kell at Hawks-Naismith vs. Class 7A No. 2 Brookwood, losing 69-52 but maintain their position atop the poll. Crystal Henderson scored 24 points but was held to 9-28 shooting and 1-13 from deep. Depth is a major area of concern for the Longhorns as they can only go six deep. No. 2 Warner Robins is closing the gap, beating No. 7 Jones County 44-43 to improve their resume. Jones County bounced back later in the week with a 44-42 win over Class 2A No. 9 Northeast-Macon. No. 6 Hiram defeated last week’s Class 7A No. 7 Carrollton 46-39. No. 8 Northside-Columbus plummets three spots and nearly more after getting ran out of the gym by Class 4A No. 7 Hardaway 58-34. No. 9 Calhoun survived at Blessed Trinity 51-49.
Class 4A sees seismic changes as No. 1 Griffin ascends to the top of the poll after a ho-hum 70-42 win at Upson-Lee but more importantly because No. 4 Holy Innocents’ drops three spots following a 55-51 loss at No. 3 Westminster who climbs three positions after Stanford-signee Courtney Ogden dumped in 28 points. No. 2 Luella won at No. 5 Stockbridge 66-62 behind Milani Smith’s 18 points and 8 rebounds. Stockbridge also lost to Class 2A No. 2 Central-Macon 48-37 at the Sandy’s Spiel Showdown. No. 6 Baldwin lost at the Sandy’s Spiel Showdown as well, beat by Class 7A No. 1 Archer 70-54. Janaye Walker had 16 points, 20 rebounds and 3 blocks in the loss. No. 7 Hardaway moves up after drilling last week’s Class 5A No. 5 Northside-Columbus on the road 58-34 before falling 75-43 to Class 3A No. 1 Hebron Christian. No. 8 Walnut Grove survived two close calls against North Oconee (49-44) and Cedar Shoals (41-38) ahead of Tuesday’s crucial Region 8 tilt at No. 9 Chestatee who is coming off a 61-52 victory at rival North Hall, Riley Black posting 23 points and 11 rebounds. No. 10 Westover beat Class 3A No. 10 Monroe 53-49 before falling to Valdosta 53-44.
Some major results came through in Region 7, reshaping the top of the poll in Class 3A. While No. 1 Hebron Christian rolled past Class 4A No. 7 Hardaway 75-43, the balance of power was being determined in Region 7 as the first domino to fall was No. 3 Wesleyan rallying at home from down 14 in the first half to stun No. 4 Lumpkin County 74-68 in overtime after the Indians missed the front end of a one-and-one and allowed Chit-Chat Wright to race down the floor to score at the buzzer to send the game to overtime tied at 62, Wright finishing with 20 points and Eva Garabadian 18. The Wolves didn’t have long to celebrate however as they lost at No. 2 White County 59-51, Emmanuel-signee Naomi Roberts exploding for 25 points. The Warriors, who spring up four spots, closed the week with a solid 52-47 win against North Hall their ninth consecutive victory. Elsewhere in Region 7, No. 5 Pickens held off Sonoraville 51-41. No. 7 Carver-Columbus lost 77-56 at Class A D-I No. 2 St. Francis, continuing to flounder against elite competition but still a threat in Class 3A. No. 8 Cross Creek lost 50-42 to North Augusta, SC before pounding Laney 81-62. No. 10 Monroe slips a spot with a 53-49 loss at Class 4A No. 10 Westover.
The toughest team to score on in Class 2A this season is No. 2 Central-Macon. The Lady Chargers, who are up two spots, proved that defense travels as they locked up Class 4A No. 5 Stockbridge 48-37 at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase. Alaya Grane scored 19 points and Taliah Grier had 16 as the Charger backcourt outplayed the Tigers. No. 6 Landmark Christian tumbles four slots following a 54-52 loss at newly ranked No. 5 Columbia. No. 7 Banks County was stifled by Class A D-I No. 5 Rabun County 52-37. No. 9 Northeast-Macon lost a tight game at Class 5A No. 7 Jones County 44-42. Murray County (4-2) exits after a 67-39 loss to Class A D-I No. 3 Elbert County at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase, 5-foot-10 sophomore Bayleigh Winkler a bright spot for the banged up Indians, finishing with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Class A D-I No. 1 Galloway pounded Tallulah Falls (2-7) 84-32 – part of the Indians’ six-straight losses that bump them out of the Top 10 this week – before topping Class 6A No. 5 Langston Hughes 54-45 at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase as Tianna Thompson scored 20 points. No. 2 St. Francis handled Class 3A No. 7 Carver-Columbus 77-56. No. 3 Elbert County feasted on last week’s Class 2A No. 10 Murray County at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase, cruising to a 67-39 victory behind Aaniyah Allen’s 36 points and 6 steals. No. 4 Woodville-Tompkins usurps No. 5 Rabun County to move back into the Top 4 after the Wolverines blew out Bryan County (5-2) on the road 68-45 to drop the Redskins from the rankings and then won at 7-3 Class 7A Richmond Hill 46-41 to avenge a prior loss. Rabun County earned a 52-37 win over Class 2A No. 7 Banks County with Lucy Hood collecting 15 points, 5 assists and 6 steals. Trion (3-1) is the third team to fall out this week, beat at Chattooga 58-55. No. 8 Athens Christian re-enters the Top 10 after two easy wins while No. 9 Oglethorpe County appears for the first time fresh off wins over East Jackson (61-46) and Tallulah Falls (57-54). The Patriots travel to Athens Christian on Tuesday as both programs put their Top 10 rankings on the line immediately. No. 10 Claxton cracks in for the first time riding a 52-39 win over Screven County.
The longest active winning streak in the GHSA, 29 games, was broken at the Sandy’s Spiel Showcase as Class A D-II No. 1 Lake Oconee Academy was defeated by Class 7A No. 8 North Paulding 42-32. Jada Williams led the Titans with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 6 steals and 1 block. The Titans remain atop the classification due to strength of schedule however as they secured a 49-32 win at last week’s Class A D-I No. 8 Tallulah Falls. No. 2 Taylor County won 57-37 at Macon County while No. 3 Clinch County edged Berrien 53-45. No. 4 Turner County suffered a 62-51 loss at Deerfield-Windsor but beat Pelham for the second time in two weeks, 46-41 on the road. No. 6 Montgomery County toppled Vidalia 48-40 after trailing 18-8 after the first quarter. Reigning Class A-Public Player of the Year Marley Bell posted 22 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists and 7 steals. No. 7 Mt. Zion-Carrollton defeated Greenforest 44-30 on the road. No. 8 Seminole County debuts in the rankings after drilling No. 9 Randolph-Clay 46-25. No. 10 Towns County slips two spots with a 50-46 loss to Union County. Charlton County (1-2) departs with a 39-30 loss to Hilliard, FL.
