BOYS

Class AAAAAAA

No. 1 McEachern 82, No. 8 Duluth 66: The Wildcats ran out of gas and the three balls stopped dropping as the Indians turned a 51-47 advantage after three into a 16-point win. Isaac Okoro finished with 32 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Sharife Cooper netted 26 points to go with his 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 1 block. Babatunde Akingbola had 11 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 6 blocks. Jared Jones added 8 points, 6 rebounds and 1 steal. The Wildcats hit 8 threes. Adam Flagler posted 18 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Will Huzzie tacked on 15 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Lamont Smith had 11 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists in the loss.

Lakeside-DeKalb 56, No. 2 Norcross 55 OT: In the upset of the year, the Vikings stunned Norcross with a late Damon Davis three. Davis finished with 17 points.

Pebblebrook 71, No. 3 Wheeler 68: Grant Howard dropped 25 points and Canisius-signee Mervin James added 17 points in the Eagle win. DJ Murray chipped in 12 points. The Wildcats were led by EJ Montgomery’s 20 points and Isaac Martin’s 18. Tennessee State-signee Austin Johnson had 12 points and 5 rebounds while Brandon Younger scored 11.

No. 7 Mountain View 66, No. 4 Newton 65 OT: Kevin Kayongo knocked down a three to stun the Rams at the buzzer. In the loss Ashton Hagans finished with 22 points, 16 rebounds and 8 assists. Armani Harris had 16 points and 4 rebounds while Dre Butler chipped in 11 points and 7 rebounds.

Etowah 49, No. 9 Peachtree Ridge 46: The Eagles soared to 8-1 as they upset the Lions, handing Peachtree Ridge their first loss of the season. Adrian Cohen totaled 16 points and 5 rebounds. Jaxon Etter had 10 points and 5 rebounds. Julian Baldwin put up 9 points and 8 rebounds. Nick Nagy netted 9 points. Carter Ingersoll gobbled up 15 rebounds. Florida State-signee Devin Vassell was held to 11 points.

No. 10 Collins Hill 78, Forestview (NC) 48: Mandarius Dickerson netted 19 points and Justin Lee chipped in 16. Chris Parks scored 14 points and Alec Oglesby tacked on 11 points. Forestview was led by Darian Anderson’s 14 points and Logan Botts and Jalen Baldwin’s 10 apiece.

GICAAMt. Bethel Christian 61, Berkmar 52: Jaquez Gilbert scored 17 points for the Eagles while Tony Johnson had 15 for the Patriots. Stanley Eze was named MVP for Mt. Bethel.

Discovery 71, South Gwinnett 58: Jaylen Bussey netted 19 points to power the Titans. Jaden Walker had 11 points and 5 assists. London Riley scored 12 points.

Hoover (AL) 62, Kennesaw Mountain 53: Clemson-commit Trey Jemison was named game MVP with 15 points, 15 rebounds and 2 blocks for the Buccaneers. Jamari Blackmon had 24 points and 6 rebounds. Marion Humphrey finished with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists. Josh Strong led the Mustangs with 20 points and 3 steals. Jalyn McCreary added 12 points and 7 rebounds. Jordan Barnes tallied 8 points and 6 assists.

Tift County 54, 6ANo. 8 Coffee 52: Marquavius Johnson drilled a three at the buzzer to stun Coffee. Johnson finished with 6 points while Montae Terrell netted 20 points and dished out 8 assists and Rashod Bateman scored 10 and grabbed 7 rebounds. Jayce Moore had 20 points in the loss. Dalrone Donaldson pitched in 8 points and Jordan Moore scored 7.

Mill Creek 84, Central Gwinnett 65: Kendall Latney and Zion Wimby scored 14 apiece while Brandon Fletcher chipped in 13 points.

Class AAAAAA

No. 1 Langston Hughes 63, Holy Spirit Prep 58: The Panthers scored a wonderful win over GISA state champion Holy Spirit Prep. The state’s most unstoppable scorer did it again, Virginia Tech-signee Landers Nolley going for 40 points (7 threes) and grabbing 8 rebounds.

No. 6 Jonesboro 65, Mt. Zion-Jonesboro 43: Jamari Smith had 19 points and 7 rebounds. Brandon Walker scored 11 points.

No. 10 Douglas County 85, New Manchester 51: Cam Copeland scored 15 points while Rodney Lewis and Malik Battle each scored 14. Marquise Collins tacked on 13.

Cambridge 47, Dunwoody 32: David Banks led the way with 12 points. Kamar Robertson added 11 points. Kyler Ingram and Bryce Boutelle scored 9 apiece.

Johns Creek 73, Northview 66: Neil Ilenrey scored 21 points and Jack Greenslit had 13. Will Penland netted 13 points and Austin Hillam scored 10.

Centennial 57, Chattahoochee 55: Freshman point guard AJ White had 20 points in the loss.

Sprayberry 76, Kell 74 OT: Justin Perry poured in 22 points in the defeat. Cameron Lockett (15), Savvon Delgado (12) and Rakim Thompson (12) all cracked double figures for the Longhorns.

Lanier 44, Brookwood 40: Chris Smalls scored 13 points and Taj Adams had 10 in the loss.

Harrison 64, North Cobb 54: Jack Brunswick netted 18 points and Elijah Williams produced 11 points and 8 rebounds in the win.

Northgate 57, BEST Academy 53 OT: Matthew Mitchell pumped in 31 point and Josh Anderson scored 17 to score the overtime victory.

Dalton 74, Northwest Whitfield 63: Jalen Westfield scored 25 points.  Aaron Fraire double-doubled with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Trey Ramsey collected 11 points and 16 rebounds.

Class AAAAA

No. 1 Warner Robins 96, Jones County 75: Trevon Williams scored 20 points and Nelson Phillips added 18 points in the win. Jacolbey Owens netted 12 points and Champ Dawson finished with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. In the loss, Garrian Wade pumped in 25 points for the Greyhounds. Adam Jackson scored 23 and Byrson Wooten netted 8.

No. 3 Miller Grove 78, Therrell 50:  Maurice Harvey dropped 22 points followed by Lorenzo Anderson and Jermon Clark’s 12 apiece. Timothy Stargell had 6 points and 5 assists.

No. 4 Columbia 63, Henry County 52: Lorenzo McGhee double-doubled with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Josh Taylor had 9 points and 13 rebounds. LJ Thomas scored 14 points and dished out 4 assists. Wisdom Uboh had 17 points in the loss. DeAndre Rice collected 15 points and 7 rebounds.

Cass 52, No. 9 Lithia Springs 48: Mark Chester had 22 points and Ashton Burley netted 19 in the win. Justice Hayes added 8 points.

Eagle’s Landing 60, Starr’s Mill 39: Mercer-signee Brandon Thomas had 17 points. CJ Hood chipped in 14 points and Tarrence Evans netted 12.

Paulding County 83, A-PrivateNo. 4 North Cobb Christian 74: Tyron Summerour netted 19 points for the Patriots. Kevin Brown (13), Mike Seymour (12), KJ Shade (10) and Jeremiah Reed (9) all pitched in.

Redan 82, Arabia Mountain 78 OT: Freshman Javen Smith torched Arabia Mountain with 28 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. Tez Glover had 16 points and 6 rebounds. Siah Gray added 12 points and 5 assists while Linard Cole totaled 12 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. Jordan Sterling paced the Rams with 21 points. Ta’Kari Rogers-Olive posted 16 points while Jaelin Simpson and N’Kyzie Hawkins scored 11 apiece in the loss.

Chamblee 57, Decatur 44: Chance Moore netted 17 points and Zachery Mackson and Rodney Smith put in 15 points apiece.

No. 3 Sandy Creek 89, North Clayton 53: TJ Bickerstaff collected 22 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. Chris Porter had 16 points, 4 assists and 2 steals. Julian Alexander finished with 12 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Xavier Brewer tossed in 11 points and Kam Miller contributed 9 points and 8 rebounds.

No. 6 Mary Persons 80, Jackson 74: Cam Holden piled in 38 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks. Tre Edge had 15 points and 7 rebounds. Dee Morton posted 12 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Desmond Williams netted 10 points.

No. 8 Cartersville 54, 3ANo. 6 Calhoun 27: Cartersville received 16 points and Perignon Dyer and 15 from Furman-signee Jaylon Pugh. Isaac Gridley added 10 points. Davis Allen had 8 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks in the loss.

No. 10 Westover 68, Glynn Academy 59: The Patriots rode their backcourt to a win at the U-Save-It Classic. Cam Weston collected 23 points, 4 assists and 2 steals. Jordan Brown netted 15 points. Mike Isler Jr. had 11 points, 12 rebounds and 2 steals. Ikenine Ochie tallied 9 points and 10 rebounds.

East Jackson 77, Athens Christian 62: Jace Bonds scored 20 points and Makayl Rakestraw netted 15. Kohl Phillips had 19 for Athens Christian.

Shaw 84, Kendrick 74: Jalen Ken (17), Lincoln Smith (14), Darnell Moran (14), TJ Mitchell (10) and Trey Lee (10) all cracked double figures.

Blessed Trinity 58, Hillgrove 40: Reid Gonzalez and Andy Swade scored 12 apiece. Jack Stephans netted 10 points.

No. 7 Westside-Macon 111, Pike County 57: Khavon Moore tallied 28 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 blocks in the rout. Greg Holloway had 22 points and 6 rebounds. Javian Mosley grabbed 13 points and 4 rebounds while Kowacie Reeves Jr. netted 12 points and Des Foston had 5 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Dawson County 53, Forsyth Central 39: Jeremiah Crumley had 21 points and 10 rebounds. Campbell Reed netted 16 points and Cullen Reed collected 8 points and 11 rebounds. Kane Pelfrey added 4 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Ryan Gallenkamp had 4 points and 5 rebounds.

Monroe Area 73, Winder-Barrow 60: Elijah Goodman scored 22 points and Isaiah Glasper netted 17 for Monroe Area. Devin Sheats added 13 points and Michael Gray double-doubled with 10 points and 10 rebounds, moving to 7-0.

No. 2 Banks County 64, West Hall 54: Carl Cleveland scored 22 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Darius Bonds had 14 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists and 2 blocks and Dylan Orr finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks. Gabe Martin tacked on 11. Noah Edmondson led West Hall with 15 points followed by Braden Martin (11), Tae Reed (9) and Jesse Malik (8).

No. 3 South Atlanta 84, Whites Creek (TN) 73: Jalen Stegall poured in 30 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Ja’Quavian Florence netted 20 points for the Hornets. Whites Creek was led by Dylan Wade’s 18 points and 9 rebounds and Dennis Stallings’ 17 points.

No. 4 Jeff Davis 64, Appling County 55: Chandler Davenport dropped in 16 points. Ja’Queze Kirby posted 14 points while Kirese Manley netted 11 and Tae Thomas scored 10.

No. 5 Dublin 65, North Broward Prep (FL) 52: Clarence Jackson had 21 points and 9 rebounds at the Kreul Classic.

Northeast-Macon 52, No. 10 Washington County 51: Jeremiah Gundy had 14 points, 12 rebounds, 2 steals and 4 blocks in the loss. Jamarius Dixon pitched in 10 points and 3 rebounds. Curtis Brown posted 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals while Jawan Dukes tacked on 7 points and 6 rebounds.

No. 3 ELCA 88, Drew Charter 35: Trevon Reddish went for 18 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Malachi Rhodes  double-doubled with 15 points and 11 rebounds. No. 4 Woodville-Tompkins 63, Beach 39: Preston Crisp dropped 19 points. Deante Green scored 13 points while AJ Hassel and Charelston Willingham netted 9 apiece.

No. 5 Montgomery County 92, Vidalia 74: Daveuan Coglin piled in 31 points to blow past the Indians.

No. 10 Manchester 53, No. 1 Calhoun County 49: The Blue Devils led wire-to-wire, stunning Calhoun County. USF-signee Rashun Williams was held to 11 points while JahNile Hill poured in 23 points.

Class AAAAAAA

No. 2 Collins Hill 42, 6ANo. 2 Harrison 39: Katherine Fourie led the Eagles with 15 points, 3 assists and 2 steals. Purdue-commit Bria Harmon netted 14 points and had 3 rebounds.  Amara Newsom led the Lady Hoyas with 10 points and 3 rebounds. UAB-signee Audrey Jordan collected 8 points and 6 rebounds.

No. 7 Cherokee 54, River Ridge 39: Lacie McCoy and Kate Johnson each scored 9 points. Olivia Herrera and Laiken Wade added 8 apiece.

Lambert 61, Marietta 58: Skylar Aledia finished with 24 points. Jaleah Green collected 18 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists and drew 3 charges. Summer Edwards added 7 points and 10 rebounds. Katie Schwind had 7 assists.

Kennesaw Mountain 43, Allatoona 27: Gracie O’Neill led the way with 9 points. Maya Inman chipped in 7 points and 12 rebounds. Mikayla Montag had 8 points and 7 assists.

No. 5 Northview 59, Johns Creek 28: Ashlee Austin netted 17 points. Eden Sample scored 14. Asjah Inniss and Maya Richards each scored 9 points while Megan Cistulli dropped in 6.

No. 8 Stephenson 56, No. 1 Lovejoy 53: Genesis Bryant scored 18 points but the Wildcats were stunned by the Jaguars.

Douglas County 41, New Manchester 36: The Lady Tigers handed the Lady Jaguars their first loss of the season. Amari Robinson had 17 points and Desirae Jackson netted 15. Kyndall Golden scored 11 points in the loss.

Class AAAAA

No. 8 Villa Rica 74, Cass 47: Aliyah Hindsman posted 18 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Jaila Orozco collected 14 points and 8 rebounds. Emmy Parham netted 13 points and Kyndal Coleman had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Deasia Merrill finished with 11 points as the Wildcats won the SMI Carroll County Christmas Classic.

Class AAAA

No. 7 Madison County 64, 3ANo. 9 Hart County 56: Torrion Starks scored 23 points on her way to 1,000 total in her career, but the Bulldogs could not score a win. Freshman Taniya Alexander netted 20 points.

Stephens County 51, Habersham Central 42: Anaiah Wilson (17), Nana Eades (13) and Tykia Thompson (12) paced the Indians.

Burke County 59, Westside-Augusta 32: Quin’deja Hamilton had 28 points off 6 threes. Kianni Westbrook netted 13 points.

Chestatee 63, North Oconee 60: Cooper Wilson scored 23 points. Cameron Gwyn netted 11 and Josue Bustamante chipped in 10.

No. 6 Johnson-Savannah 55, Tattnall County 38: Bubbles Williams poured in 16 points followed by Jasmine Thompson’s 12. Giana Copeland collected 7 points, 7 rebounds and 11 blocks. Kashay Hankerson led Tattnall County with 21 points off 5 threes.

No. 7 Dawson County 59, Forsyth Central 40: Calli Watson netted a season-high 22 points. Emma Brown scored 12 points and Cadey Ayers had 7. Abi Chatham and Sophia D’Oliveira both had 6 points.

No. 10 North Murray 53, Bremen 38: Sarah Plemons scored 13 points followed by Tenley Gladson’s 12 and Kailee Tipton’s 8.

Jenkins 57, Islands 38: In the loss, Diamon Garvin scored 14 points and Elizabeth Sierzant had 12.

Calhoun 41, Cartersville 36: Erin Davis had 13 points and Railey Greeson netted 12 points.

Bryan County 53, Claxton 32: Olonna Rawls went off for 28 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Brooklyn Hewitt scored 8 points and Jabrai Boyd netted 7.

Class A-Private

No. 2 Wesleyan 83, Fayette County 58: The Lady Wolves rolled at Whitewater’s Queens of the Hardwood. AC Carter posted 27 points and 15 rebounds. Sutton West added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Amaya Register notched 18 points and 6 assists. Fayette County was led by Rikkelle Miller’s 16 points and 4 rebounds and Maegan Barkley’s 15 points. Trinity Brown added 10 points and 6 assists.

No. 9 Athens Academy 41, Walker 36: Maddie McCleary scored 13 points, Greer Moseley had 12 points and Rose Bone grabbed 10 rebounds.

Class A-Public

No. 9 Woodville-Tompkins 53, Windsor Forest 38: Algeria Scott and Kenrianna Bennett netted 13 apiece for Woodville-Tompkins.

No. 2 St. Pius blitzes No. 7 Stephens County 79-65

From the opening tip, No. 2 St. Pius (8-1) was on a mission to take care of business at the beautiful Currahee Arena. No. 7 Stephens County (6-1) turned out the lights to bring a raucous atmosphere into play, but the home standing fans were quickly negated by the Golden Lions’ 9-0 run just 1:16 into the contest.

Instead of using a timeout to try and slow down St. Pius’ defensive harassment and three-point barrage, Coach Chad Bridges elected to try and let his guys play through it, a plan that backfired. The Golden Lions attacked and attacked. Zach Ranson came off the bench and quickly picked up a steal and assist to Brian Gonzalo.

When the dust settled from the first quarter, it was a 27-9 St. Pius advantage. Interestingly enough, the Golden Lions got out to their hot start with point guard Matt Gonzalo on the bench to begin. Stephens County sat 6-foot-7 post DeUndra Singleton to begin as well. Tae Thornton looked like the only Indian ready to handle the Lions’ non-stop pressure defense, but against a team like St. Pius, it takes more than one soldier to defend the castle.

After sinking five first quarter threes, the Golden Lions continued their onslaught, hitting four more in the second quarter. With the game already out of hand, Jackson Bell provided a small spark for the Indians, entering the game and picking up an And-1 opportunity off a put-back but the Indians still trailed 36-19 with 3:39 remaining in the half.

Stephens County went on a run and closed the gap to 41-28 with 55.2 seconds left, riding Thornton’s fearless play attacking the rim and setting up transition opportunities, but momentum was quickly lost as St. Pius closed on a 4-0 spurt including a Finn McCurdy put-back at the buzzer to take a comfortable 45-28 lead into halftime.

St. Pius opened up the third quarter a little sloppy as the Indians played fast and tried to use their length and athleticism advantages against the Golden Lions. At the 6:20 mark, Stephens County had clawed their deficit to a hoop away from being single digits at 45-34, but it would be the closest they would come in the second half. St. Pius quickly answered with an 8-2 run to balloon the lead back up to 53-36 hitting threes to crush the Indians’ spirit. Brian Gonzalo sank two threes in the period on his way to finishing with a team-high 15 points while brother Matt sank a triple, as did Patrick Snipes, contributing to the Lions’ 13 three-pointers on the night.

At the end of three quarters, St. Pius held a 67-45 lead and would milk it all the way to the final horn. Singleton scored eight of his game-high 21 points in garbage time while 6-foot-6 Ty Nails tossed in six of his 12 points in the same frame.

My Take

The gap between No. 1 Upson-Lee and No. 2 St. Pius and the rest of the field seems enormous right now. No. 3 Sandy Creek is quietly having a strong season, as are teams in Region 1 out in Columbus, but the Knights and Golden Lions are playing great basketball night in and night out. The Golden Lions’ press defense is suffocating. They put their foot on the Indians neck from the opening tip and never gave them an opportunity to even think about an upset. The Lions move the ball so well, they are most likely the state’s most efficient offense when they are clicking. Driving and dishing led to countless wide-open three-pointers; they had 21 assists as a team. Defenses will need to be on a string to be able to contest all of St. Pius’ open looks. Matt Gonzalo and Brian Gonzalo were at their best tonight, peppering the defense with their drives and their three-point shooting. Matt is one of the quickest guards with the ball in his hands in the state. Everett Lane buried his three-point chances and rebounded well for his size. I love what Niko Broadway and Patrick Snipes bring to the table. They aren’t flashy but they are trustworthy glue guys that are always in the right spot to fill up the stat sheet. I need to see more from Kennedy Willis inside. He struggled to make an impact and wasn’t able to really clamp down on DeUndra Singleton. At 6-foot-8, a reboundless game is not going to cut it.

Stephens County was just outclassed tonight. They are still a very dangerous team for the rest of the state, but they just don’t matchup well with what St. Pius does. Tae Thornton was most impressive. He was a little out of control at times, but the 6-foot-1 senior guard played very hard and his athleticism gave St. Pius trouble from time to time. DeUndra Singleton didn’t have the D1 performance I was hoping to see from him tonight, but the big fella is still definitely a college prospect that will be able to provide minutes at the next level. The pace of the game was not conducive to post play, but Singleton still managed 21 points and 5 rebounds. Not being able to play above the rim will hurt him at the next level, but he still is a load on the low block and uses his burly shoulders well. Ty Nails was quiet. The 6-foot-6 swingman didn’t handle St. Pius’ pressure very well and struggled to get going on offense. Jackson Bell brought a nice energy off the bench. No. 7 Mountain View 46, Discovery 45: Troy-signee Spencer Rodgers was fouled on a three with 2.8 seconds left and buried all three free throws to stun Discovery. Rodgers finished with 17 points while Miles Long added 8. Old Dominion-signee Kalu Ezikpe led the Titans with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Jaden Walker added 9 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

No. 10 Collins Hill 54, No. 8 Duluth 50: Mandarius Dickerson scored 18 points while Chris Parks (15) and Justin Lee (14) also did damage. Duluth was led by Adam Flagler’s 13 points and Lamont Smith’s 12.

Lambert 94, North Forsyth 74: Mitch Ganote hung a triple-double on the Raiders, going for 29 points, 7 rebounds, 11 assists and 11 steals.

Hillgrove 56, North Paulding 52: Orry Owens scored 22 points for the Hawks. The Wolfpack received 22 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks from junior Jacob Harris in the loss.

Etowah 62, Sequoyah 44: The Etowah Eagles (7-1) jumped out to an 11-2 lead on the sophomore laden Sequoyah Chiefs (1-7) at the Hickory Flat War Lodge and coasted to a 62-44 victory. Junior Jaxon Etter scored 5 first quarter points and was assisted by solid play off the bench by forward Colby Milton to take an 18-7 lead after the first quarter. In the second frame steady point guard Nick Nagy added 5 points and 3 assists as he got open looks for Etter and 6-foot-7 center Julian Baldwin. The Eagles put the clamps on Chiefs scoring ace Jackson Greco holding him to zero field goals and 6 points in the first half. Sequoyah was led by junior DJ  King with 8 points and 3 rebounds. For Etowah, Etter had 10 first half points while Nagy had 8 points and 3 assists as they raced out to a 30-22 lead at the half. King opened the third stanza with a three to cut the lead to five, but a Nagy three and steal for a layup pushed the score up to 41-27 at the 3:45 mark. Tusculumi-signee Adrian Cohen closed the frame 51-34 with a steal and breakaway dunk. Carter Ingersoll after a quiet first half chipped in with 8 points and 5 rebounds in the quarter. Etowah cruised in the fourth period and cleared the bench at the 2:15 mark with a 61-38 advantage. Etter took scoring honors 16 points and 6 rebounds while Nagy had 13 points and 3 assists. DJ King paced the Chiefs with 12 points and 3 assists while Geco tallied 11 points.

No. 1 Langston Hughes 75, Mays 66: The state’s most unstoppable scorer struck for the first time in major fashion this year, Virginia Tech-signee Landers Nolley exploding for 51 points.

No. 6 Jonesboro 77, Forest Park 47: Jamari Smith posted 31 points and 10 rebounds. Jamari Mosley had 13 points and 7 rebounds and Miles Black added 11 points and 8 assists.

No. 10 Douglas County 88, Westlake 79: Cam Copeland put in 23 points followed by Rickey Clark’s 19 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Tigers. Ernest Randle had 13 points and 8 rebounds. Malik Battle and Jeremiah Smith each scored 12 points.

Glynn Academy 58, Monroe 32: Santana Young poured in 21 points followed by Syron Noyes’ 16. Carieon Robbins added 13 in the win at the U-Save-It Holiday Classic.

Fayette County 60, Marietta 56: Ricky Knight Jr. poured in 23 points to pace the Tigers. JeKobe Coleman added 19 points and Josh Dupree went for 10 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists.

Stockbridge 58, Union Grove 48: Georgia State-signee Kavonte Ivery netted 23 points. Elijah Austell had 16 points and Ocean Scott finished with a 13-point 10-rebound double-dobule.

Kell 70, Woodstock 56: Kell received 26 points from Savvon Delgado and 15 from Jahwan Smith. Tyler Johnson added 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals. In the loss, Nick Jones had 13 points and 7 rebounds. Jailen Robinson had 9 points and 8 rebounds. Ryan Landers chipped in 10 points, 5 rebound, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Clarke Central 76, Loganville 42: Jamar Moore had 14 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 blocks in the loss.

St. Pius hit 13 threes including five in the first quarter and nine in the first half. Brian Gonzalo finished with 15 points and 3 assists while Everett Lane netted 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Patrick Snipes contributed 9 points and 5 rebounds and Matt Gonzalo came off the bench to tally 7 points, 6 assists and 3 steals. The victory is Coach Corry Black’s first, snapping a 29-game losing streak. Tyres Hicks led the way with 21 points. Ian Matthews had 9 and Josef Douglas added 8.

Free throws ice No. 8 Maynard Jackson’s great overtime escape at No. 9 Lithia Springs

We need more Wednesday night games. Thanks to the snow storm of last week, No. 8 Maynard Jackson (9-0) vs. No. 9 Lithia Springs (7-1) was pushed back and thank goodness it was. With undefeated records and first-place in Region 6-AAAAA on the line, both teams left everything on the floor after a sluggish start, but in the end, it was the Jaguars finding a way to survive in overtime in front of a hostile home crowd.

There were no high-flying offensive spectacles on display at Lithia Springs, instead it was a throwback hard-nosed ugly game to start. Both teams struggled to score, especially Maynard Jackson with 6-foot-7 senior forward TJ Boykin coming off the bench with a bad back. Lithia Springs took a quick lead behind a Terrence Ashford three-ball.

Both teams pressed each other, with the Lions forcing some early turnovers while making it a point to keep the ball out of Marquavis Carter’s hands, likely the Region’s best player entering the night averaging 23.8 points. The Lions held Carter scoreless in the first quarter and took a gritty 10-8 lead into the second quarter.

Maynard Jackson got their footing and started to turn the tables with their 2-2-1 press but couldn’t quite take control of the game as a quick 4-0 spurt, which felt like much more at the time, forced a Coach Travis Williams timeout with his Jaguars trailing 16-10 at the 3:42 mark of the second quarter.

The pace quickened and the home crowd started to make its presence felt as the Lions finished the quarter on a 7-3 run sparked by 6-foot-5 freshman post Omarion Smith’s defense, helping Lithia Springs take a 25-17 lead into the half. Smith, who came in averaging over six blocks per game, started flying around, turning his defense into Lions offense, blocking four shots in the half while Ashford and Anthony Hardy traded buckets to grow the lead.

Down eight points, halftime couldn’t have come at a better time for Maynard Jackson. Carter was held to three points while Boykin entered off the bench with three quick turnovers and zero offensive production. The saving grace for the Jaguars was the play of Damari “DJ” Johnson. With Carter and Boykin held to nearly nothing, it was the 5-foot-8 senior who decided to step up. Johnson steadied the Jags with six first half points, three rebounds and three assists, but if Maynard Jackson was to remain undefeated, they would need major contributions from their horses in the second half and that is exactly what they got.

As if a switch was flipped, the Jaguars became the aggressor in the third quarter. Maynard Jackson cut the Lithia Springs to 27-26 at the 5:11 mark behind a 7-0 run sparked by Johnson, who made a layup followed by a Boykin three and a Timipa Ogoun bucket inside.

With the Jaguars pulling close, Ashford answered back with an old-fashioned three-point play to ease the lead back to four.

But from there, Maynard Jackson surged ahead, closing the third quarter on a 9-2 run and outscoring the Lions 20-9 in the frame for a 37-34 advantage. Ashford scored seven of Lithia’s nine points in the quarter but Maynard Jackson began to see their stars break free, Johnson scoring six points, followed by Carter and Boykin’s five apiece.

Back and forth the two teams traded leads throughout the fourth quarter. Senior Christian Horton, who scored all four of his points in the fourth quarter, finally saw the ball drop through with a tough hook shot in the lane as Lithia Springs regained a 42-41 lead at the 5:25 mark.

But in a foreboding sign, Carter got to the line on what looked like a bad call and sank both free throws. Carter finished the night with a game-high 22 points but only made three field goals, the rest coming on 15-of-19 shooting from the foul line including going 14-of-17 in the fourth quarter and overtime.

The Lions held a 46-45 lead with 2:37 on the clock and sent Hardy to the line with a chance to extend it, but instead Hardy went 0-for-2 and Johnson raced down the floor and handed out one of his game-high six assists to Marquis Colzie to give Maynard Jackson a 47-46 advantage.

Johnson struck yet again with a scoop shot in the lane with just over a minute to play giving the Jaguars a 50-48 edge. After a missed jumper, Maynard Jackson controlled the rebound and Boykin was fouled with 36.9 seconds remaining, where he would split a pair of free throws. Hardy attacked in transition off the miss but went 1-of-2 from the line putting the score at 51-49. Colzie grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled. He missed the front-end of the one-and-one, allowing Lithia Springs to advance the ball with 18 seconds left before Coach JW Cantrell called timeout.

Ogoun swatted a drive attempt out of bounds, putting the Lions in the corner with 10.4 seconds remaining in regulation. Lithia Springs turned it over with 6.8 seconds left and Ogoun was sent to the line with a chance to ice it with two free throws. He hit his first, making it a three-point game and the Lions seemingly in need of a miracle. Ogoun missed his second free throw and the Lions’ prayers were answered. Chance Ellison grabbed the rebound and quickly tossed it to junior guard Karee Anderson, who quickly advanced it up the left sideline. The lefty pulled-up on a dime and drilled a three at the buzzer in front of a defender to send the game to overtime time at 52-52 and the crowd into a frenzy.

In overtime, Lithia Springs held a 57-56 lead with 1:05 left, but Carter drew a foul curling from the left of the arc to the top of the perimeter where he was able to exaggerate the contact and baited the refs into calling a foul. Carter buried all three free throws to take a 59-57 lead that the Jags would never lose. The Lions cut the score to 64-62 with 12.8 seconds left and 66-64 with 4.7 remaining but the Jaguars were money from the line going 15-of-19 in overtime, Carter sinking 9-of-11 and Johnson 4-of-4 to ice the game.

My Take

After an ugly start to the game, No. 8 Maynard Jackson at No.9 Lithia Springs ended up being one of the best games I have seen this year. The house was loud and the place was packed in the lower bowl section. I didn’t see enough for either team to be considered legit state title contenders, especially with No. 1 Warner Robins, No. 2 Buford and the deadly Region 5 group that this Region 6 has to pair up with in the first round, but I did see two well-coached teams that had their kids playing hard. Both teams have some tricky guards that can give opponents trouble in the state playoffs and could advance a few rounds in.

Marquavis Carter was held in check the entire game, but the fact that he could score 22 points on three made field goals is impressive. The 6-foot-1 lefty off-guard has a pretty stroke that is often lethal when given space to fire. Credit Lithia Springs’ high energy defense for knowing where Carter was at all times, but like all great players can, Carter still found a way to beat the Lions by getting to the line. I was most impressed by little DJ Johnson. He didn’t look like much, the smallest player on the floor with a vibrant red-mouth piece, but Johnson was great. So pesky, he kept finding ways to score in the paint and even come away with offensive rebounds at 5-foot-8. Without his consistent play throughout, there is no way Maynard Jackson wins this game. 6-foot-7 senior TJ Boykin has been a highly touted prospect his entire career at Columbia then transferred into Maynard Jackson for his final season. I was told that he had a bad back, but I came away unimpressed. His motor was in hibernation mode for much of the game and he didn’t play with much energy. The potential is still there, but I’m not sure we will ever see him dominate at the high school level like we might have thought he could a few years back. He’s still a super intriguing player at the next level. We might be able to chalk up his lackluster performance to his back, but we will have to see; the clock is ticking. 6-foot-5 sophomore post Timipa Ogoun kind of reminds me of 2017 River Ridge graduate Destin Exinor with his body type and athleticism. You can tell Ogoun is young and a little raw, but he has a quick leap and came up big with some late rebounds and blocks.

Lithia Springs has a stable of steady players, no real stars. They can nickel and dime you for 10 points apiece and make defending them a real headache. Senior Terrence Ashford came up big for the Lions and was fearless attacking the basket as was sophomore leading scorer Anthony Hardy. Hands down I was most impressed by 6-foot-5 freshman Omarion Smith. He is an elite shot-blocker in the class of 2021 and considering his size, he might be the best rim protector in the state for his grade right now. He gets to nearly every single ball that is shot his way (8 blocks) and rebounds his area effectively. He even showed off a 15-footer, but his offense is still improving and he doesn’t see many post touches. He will be a player to track over the next few years, especially if he can squeeze out a few more inches to his frame.
