Class AAAAAAA

Westlake picks up a pair of All-State Second Teamers in Shekinah Howard and Simone Lett. Howard comes in from Hapeville Charter where her play as a versatile wing garnered ACC interest. She averaged 15.7 points, 10.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. Lett, a former Region 2 foe at Pebblebrook, averaged 15.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.8 blocks as a 6-foot-1 forward.  The twosome joins a now loaded Westlake roster which is ready to come of age after graduating just two seniors.  With Taylor Hosendove expected to return, the Lions will flaunt three All-State selections.

Wheeler combats Westlake’s moves with the addition of Yazz Wazeerud-din. The athletic 6-foot forward was a First Team All Region 7-AAAAAA pick while at Pope.

Sisters Laren and Logan VanArsdale transfer from Whitefield Academy to Hillgrove. Laren was a First Team All-Region selection while Logan was an Honorable Mention pick in the loaded Region 6A. Laren is a playmaker that will make her teammates better with her ability to create off the bounce.

Catherine Shope adds major fire power to the North Forsyth backcourt, a team which already returns all five starters. Shope was a GICAA All-State selection after pouring in 21.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 4.4 steals per game at The King’s Academy in Woodstock. She is a high-volume scorer that will have help in place at North Forsyth, easing her offensive burden.

Rockdale County’s leading scorer, Diamond Swift, transfers over to neighboring Newton to join Lexii Chatman in the backcourt. Swift averaged 11.8 points as a sophomore and now bolsters the Rams’ guard rotation.

South Gwinnett gets a scoring punch in the form of Providence Christian Academy transfer Tamia Francis. Francis averaged 14.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3 steals and 3.4 blocks per game for the Storm.

Class AAAAAA

Melany Jackson provides a reloading Grovetown team with some toughness inside. At 5-foot-10 from Jefferson County, Jackson rebounds the ball well and can put it on the floor from 15-feet in to get to the hoop. She averaged 8.1 points as a sophomore.

Class AAAAA
Class AAAA

In an effort to make sure Auburn-commit Brooke Moore goes out with a bang her senior year at Henry County, junior Janiyah Jones has moved in to strengthen the backcourt and take some of the scoring burden off Moore. Jones averaged 11.3 points and 5.4 rebounds as a sophomore at Whitewater.

Hardaway’s rebuilding process takes a monumental hit as Class AAAA All-State Second Teamer Olivia Cochran transfers to Carver-Columbus after posting 17.2 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game as a 6-foot-1 freshman. She joins a Tiger team that finished as state runner-ups; their only weakness their lack of dominant size which Cochran more than makes up for now. Mariah Igus, Alycia Reese and Ja’nya Love-Hill will circle Cochran on the perimeter.

A part of Cross Creek’s twin tower success with Memphis-signee Alana Davis, Kianni Westbrook is ready to anchor her own team at Burke County. The 6-foot-1 lanky shot-blocker averaged 7.6 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2 blocks as a sophomore.

Class AAA

The rich get richer as reigning Class AAA state champion Beach sees Preseason All-Coastal Georgia honoree NaTeari Chaney transfer in from Savannah High. Chaney averaged 20.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game en route to being named an All-State Honorable Mention selection last season. Beach enters the season as a strong favorite to defend their title.

Class AA
Class A

With two All-Americans off to college, St. Francis lands Jordan Isaacs to pick up where they left off. The 6-foot-2 forward was an All-Region 3 First Team selection at North Paulding. She excels at rebounding and catches opponents off guard with her left-handed offensive arsenal.

Chandler Davis joins St. Francis after averaging over 11 points and 2 steals per game at Alpharetta as a freshman.

Spielin’ & Dealin’ Ep. 19: D’Marcus Simonds interview

2017 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year D’Marcus Simonds joins Spielin’ & Dealin’ to review his first season on campus at Georgia State. Simonds was a GHSA standout while at Buford and Gainesville. He graduated from Gainesville in 2016 and originally committed to play at Mississippi State as a 4-star recruit before reopening his recruitment.

D'Marcus Simonds

Impact 2021 Freshmen

Here’s a preview of some 2021 rising freshmen who have performed well over the summer and could see some important varsity minutes as freshmen or hold great promise after a year of seasoning.

Tykevious Curry – 6’0 – Calhoun County (Atlanta Xpress Bogan)Tykevious Curry

Averaging 23.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 3.1 steals per game over the summer, Tykevious Curry has proven to be a potent scorer with the ability to get off his mid-range jumper. He will be a strong addition to a loaded Calhoun County roster that returns everyone from this year’s Class A-Public state runner-up team.

Darreonte Gainer –  6’2 – Randolph-Clay (Atlanta Xpress Bogan)

Darreonte Gainer

Darreonte Gainer is the type of player that can turn the fortunes of a program around in a blink of an eye, especially at the Class A-Public level. Just as he did in his only year on the job at Toombs County, coach Laberton Sims will have a piece in place to win with over the next four years at his new home. The athletic wing can score inside and out and can play above the rim.  He rebounds well for his size and causes havoc with his length on defense.

Justin Carter – 6’6 – Terrell County (Atlanta Xpress Bogan)

Justin Carter

You can’t teach size. Justin Carter has it. While he will need to get in better shape and mature like many incoming freshmen, once he does he could become another Class A-Public standout just like his other three Atlanta Xpress Bogan teammates.  Carter has a soft touch around the basket and shoots the ball well from the foul line. He makes smart passes out of the post and on defense, uses his body well and can block shots.

Madison Durr – 6’0 – St. Francis (Georgia Xclusive)

Madison Durr

Madison Durr has been a popular name on travel ball circuits for a while now. The sharp guard with size knows how to put the ball in the basket and how to compete. It will be interesting to see where the floor general ends up at for high school.

Taihland Owens – 6’1 – Cherokee (Active Elite)

Taihland Owens

Taihland Owens caught my eye this summer with his size and aggressiveness. He is well put together for an incoming freshman and has a physical frame which could lead to him seeing minutes as a youngster in coach Roger Kvam’s system. Owens can shoot the three and attacks the rim in a downhill fashion. He gets after it on defense and could have a very bright future in Canton.

Johnny Sweeney – 6’6 – Cherokee (Active Elite)

Johnny Sweeney

Johnny Sweeney is a tall glass of water. Most players his age at that height with that length and not very coordinated or struggle to play inside. Sweeney doesn’t have those problems and uses his wing span the way you would hope. He is a great shot blocker that times his leaps well. Offensively, Sweeney has shown a turnaround jumper out of the post. He also is a smart passer. Size like his is hard to find in Cherokee County.

Dacari Collins – 6’3 – Woodward Academy (Georgia Xclusive)

Dacari Collins

Known for his explosive play as a highly touted wide receiver, Dacari Collins is a talented basketball player as well. He’s a physical forward that scores in the paint and loves to get out and run. He can hit the high post jumper and rebounds in traffic. Collins is expected to decide between Woodward Academy and Westlake.

Omarion Smith – 6’5 – Lithia Springs (Elite Playmakers)

Omarion Smith

Omarion Smith is a rim protector that rebounds the ball exceptionally well. He is a nice athlete that doesn’t mind doing the dirty work. He has to keep his head screwed on and not let opponents frustrate him. He is still growing and still maturing. Smith has the tools to become a major interior presence.

Makayl Rakestraw – 5’9 – East Jackson (TNBC Select)

Makayl Rakestraw

The future of East Jackson basketball could lay in Makayl Rakestraw’s hands. The point guard has a great feel for the game and thrives in transition while making the right decisions with the ball in his hands. He can score off the bounce and can open up defenses with his three-point shot.

Justin Bogard – 6’0 – Grayson (Walton Flames)

Justin Bogard

Justin Bogard, Joe Johnson of the Utah Jazz’s cousin, may not see time right away at Grayson, but could develop into a long term cornerstone for coach Geoffrey Pierce. Bogard scores from all over the floor with his unorthodox lefty stoke. He has shown over the summer the ability to carry his team with his scoring prowess. Already with nice size, check back on Bogard at the end of next season.

Max Harris – 6’0 – South Gwinnett (Georgia Stars Harris)

Max Harris

Max Harris is a shooter and a scorer. He will have to work hard to crack into the South Gwinnett rotation, but his upside is high and the task is doable. He has been a consistent producer in the Georgia Stars backcourt. Harris could be another important piece in coach Ty Anderson’s resurgence of the South Gwinnett program.

The migratory rule (See 1.63) will be waived one time for boarding students only who enter the following schools: Ben Franklin Academy; Darlington; Riverside Military Academy; Tallulah Falls. This By-law will be effective for Darlington beginning with the 2017-2018 school year and for Ben Franklin Academy, Riverside Military Academy and Tallulah Falls beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.

Proposal to adopt a “50% Sit Out Rule” as follows (See Addendum No. 1): All student athletes that complete a bona fide move will be required to sit out 50% of all varsity competitions for one calendar year. It is important to note that this 50% requirement can be waived by the former school or the student can appeal the decision. It will be the responsibility of the new school to show that the transfer was not athletic in nature.

Proposal to accept the BOARD of TRUSTEES’ recommendation for the new GHSA Executive Director to replace the retiring Gary Phillips. (Note: the recommendation will be announced at the meeting)

Adjournment

ADDENDUM No. 1

Transfer Proposal for the GHSA (50% Rule)
If a student makes a bona fide move from one GHSA high school to another GHSA high school, he/she will be required to sit out for the first 50% of all competitions for one calendar year unless the “sending” high school waives the 50% sit out rule. A form will be sent to the “sending” high school from the “receiving” school requesting the school to sign off on the transfer. The “sending” school will have the opportunity to waive the 50% Rule, or the 50% Rule will remain in place. If the “sending” school does not waive the 50% Rule, the “receiving” school will have an opportunity to appeal the decision to the Transfer Appeals Committee.

THE PROCESS:
1. The receiving school must first verify that a bona fide move has been completed. If a bona fide move has not occurred, the student is migratory for one calendar year. If the school believes that a hardship exists, the school can file the hardship paperwork with the GHSA (normal process). If a hardship is approved by the GHSA, the 50% Rule does not apply.

2. After the bona fide move has been verified, the “receiving” school will submit the (Sending School Transfer Form B) to the previous high school. The “sending” school will have 10 school days from the date sent to complete the verification form. The “sending” school will have the opportunity to waive the 50% rule. If the school has objections to the transfer, the 50% rule is applied.

3.
If the “sending” school does not waive the 50% Rule, they must complete and submit the form B verification sheet. This will allow the “sending” school an opportunity to provide additional information needed if the “receiving” school appeals the decision (Example: undue influence, community member’s influence, personal trainers, or the transfer was athletic in nature). The “receiving” school can only appeal the decision to the Transfer Appeals Committee if they do not feel the reason for the transfer was athletic in nature.

4. It is the responsibility of the receiving school to prove to the Transfer Appeals Committee that the move was not athletic in nature.

The Transfer Appeals Committee
The Transfer Appeals Committee will be comprised by members of the state executive committee. These members will be specifically trained on this process, and the GHSA office will try to use the same group of members to create consistency with the appeals as well as using members that do not have a connection to the school or region that might compete against the transfer.

If a student transfers into a school and wants to play a sport, the student’s 50% sit out will start the day of his enrollment and it will last for one calendar year. If the student participates in a sport that has already started, the athlete will sit out the assigned amount of games and this can include playoff games or wrapping around to the following season. The student is eligible to practice during the sit out time. The sit out requirement is in effect for all sports played by the student athlete. So if the student plays 3 sports, they will be required to sit 50% in all 3 sports.

50% Sit Out Rule Applied
An athlete is required to sit out half of the season in consecutive weeks. This may include playoffs or wrapping around for the following season. This starts after the school has verified that a bona fide move has occurred.

For Example: A football player transfers after the 6th game is played, the student will be required to sit out the next four games. If the team qualifies for the playoffs, the student must sit during the first playoff game. If the team advances, the student is eligible for the 2nd playoff game. In the same example, if the team does not qualify for the playoffs, the student will have to sit out the 1st game of the following year to meet the 5 game sit out requirement.

The sport specific 50% sit out times are listed below:
Football 5 games
Cheerleading 3 meets
Softball 13 games
Cross country 5 races
Volleyball 9 matches
Swimming 5 meets
Basketball 13 games
Wrestling 10 meets/dates
Gymnastics 5 meets
Tennis 9 matches
Soccer 9 games
Track 5 meets
Baseball 15 games
Lacrosse 9 games
Golf 6 matches

Form B Application – Response from Sending School

This form must be submitted to the GHSA office within ten school days from the date the receiving school sent the form. The receiving school needs to communicate with the sending school that the form has been sent. The Receiving school needs to identify how the form has been sent (fax or email) to the sending school. Failure to submit this form within the required 10 school days indicates that the student transfer has been granted a waiver on the 50% Rule.
